Dhanak (The Rainbow)

Mishti and I were watching 'Dhanak' today. The film was based on a small visually impaired boy, Chotu and his sister, Pari. Pari spots a poster of the actor Shahrukh Khan in which he promotes Eye donation.

Pari also comes to know that Shahrukh is in Jaisalmer for the shooting of one of his upcoming movies.

In the hope that Shahrukh will help his brother get back his eyesight, she heads towards Jaisalmer along with his brother.

On the way people are curious to know why these two little kids are walking all the way to Jaisalmer. And when the kids tell them that they are going to meet Shahrukh Khan, each one of them finds it funny.

Mishti - Mamma... Why do they laugh when Chotu says that they are going to meet Shahrukh Khan?

Me - Because Shahrukh Khan is an actor no...

Mishti - So??

Me - So .... Ummm...

Mishti - Kids cannot meet actors??

Sometimes we need kids to remind us that we all are humans and no one is superior or inferior just because of the kind of profession they are into :)

Mahatma Gandhi

After the recent celebration of our 70th Independence Day, Mishti knows quite a bit about the day.
Some due to the patriotic movies watched by her father the entire day, some due to the little kid who dressed up like Lokmanya Tilak at our society's Independence Day event and a lot more after asking nearly 500 questions to me about Freedom, Freedom fighters and Independence.
Some questions were like..

"Mamma you said Pakistan was part of India, then if we both got independence then why did Pakistan get separated?"

"Mamma why did British people trouble us?"

"Mamma why would British people want our money if they had their own?"

And today's question was...

Mishti : "Mamma how did Mahatma Gandhi fight for freedom."

Me : He fought through non-violence which means without harming anyone.

Mishti : Mamma do you know if Mahatma Gandhi went for a Karate class when he was small?

Me : No... I have no idea betu.... but why?

Mishti : Just like that... I just wanted to know...

No Parking

6/8/16

It was a special day for Mishti as she could finally get on a stage and address a good number of audience :)

Yes, she has been longing for this day. Last year in Chennai too she was selected for the inter school story telling competition. But the parents were not allowed in the competition. Moreover there was no dias. It was more like telling the story just to the judges.

This time too it was inter school story telling competition. She kept asking me if she was going to be on the stage. And finally she could :)

After her competition was over, we went to a mall to celebrate. While coming out of the mall she saw a sign board, which said, 'No parking'. Adi and I were busy in our conversation and didn't even notice what she did...

All of a sudden between our conversation...with a deep sigh in her voice, Mishti says.... "No Parking.... but so many parking!!!!"

We stop our conversation and look at the other side of the road... she was right :D

Mishti - Mamma what is man-made?

Me - The things which are made by human beings.

Mishti - But it says 'man-made' means things which boys made?

Me - No the term is just 'man-made'. It means both boys and girls.

Mishti - But Man means Boy no Mamma??

Me- ummm... ya but here it means both..

Mishti is still not convinced.... Anybody who has an answer to this??

Mishti's reaction on Kamala Suraiyya's poem.

16th May 2016
3:00 PM

Mishti came back from school and told all the stories of the day and as a ritual I had to tell mine too.
I asked her if she would like to hear about the poetess of India from the article that we did today on TBI- Hindi.

Mishti : I know Mamma ...it's Rabindranath Tagore.

Me : That's only one... we have many..

Mishti : okay tell me..

This was the article - http://hindi.thebetterindia.com/1854/women-poets-india-list-poetry/

The first name was Kamala Suraiyya and I started reciting her poem...

“Don’t write in English,they said,
English is Not your mother-tongue.

Why not leave Me alone, critics, friends, visiting cousins,
Every one of you?

Why not let me speak inAny language I like?

The language I speak,Becomes mine, its distortions, its queernesses

All mine, mine alone.”
–  from An Introduction, Kamala Das.

Mishti - Why did people ask her not to write in English?

Me- Because her mother tongue was Malayalam.

After 10 minutes of explanation on what Malayalam is or why one was supposed to write in her/his own mother tongue...

Mishti : Ya we can write in any language we like... like you are Bengali but you write in English and Hindi :)

" Aunty Sidhiksha hai"..

Mishti : Mamma can I go to the park with them.

Me: Yes...take your water bottle along.

Mahika : Aunty aap usko itni choti si bottle kyun dete ho?

Me: Kyunki park me use itna hi pani chahiye hota hai beta :)

Mishti : Haan aur paani waste nahi karna chahiye. Paani kitna kam hai na.

Saanvi : Tere ghar me paani kam hai.

Mishti : Aray mere ghar me nahi...village me..village me logo ko peene ko bhi paani nahi hai. Bahut door jana padta hai unko paani laane.

What we cannot buy with money!

On the final Parents teacher meet of Mishti's school in chennai, all the parents were given the report cards, the test papers and the class photograph. Mishti's class teacher- Muthu Miss asked me to check everything and also said that she wants to talk to me once the meeting is done, so I need not leave.

Muthu Miss was one of those Chennaites, who was brought up in Maharashtra and hence we shared a sspecial connection. She often spoke to me in hindi or Marathi about how nice Maharashtra is and how she misses speaking in hindi here. I thought as this was our last meeting, she might be looking forward for another long talk.

Mishti was already excited to see all her friends in a single photo and started playing the game of finding out who's Azma and who is Afsa among the twin sisters in her class.
I was enjoying the game and hence ignored the report card or the test papers.

When everyone was gone, Muthu Miss came back and asked if I had gone through the test papers. I was a little ashamed about my ignorance towards those important papers and said that I was about to check them.

Muthu Miss : Ma'am did you see her G.K paper?

Me: No....sorry..did she make too many mistakes?

Muthu Miss: No Ma'am she has done extremely well lIke always but check the last page.

I checked the last page and everything was ticked correct. So I could'nt get her point
.
Muthu Miss : Ma'am  ..on this page we had given them some questions which were not taught to them. They had to answer them as they wished. Now please look at the last question and Sidhiksha's answer.

The question was :
Q- What we can not buy with money?
Answer    -  Mamma.

I was speechless.just lIke I am right now :)

Mishti's story -Maya and her Favourite bracelet

25th February 2016

Maya and her favourite bracelet!

Once upon a time there used to live a girl named Maya. One day she wanted a bracelet in the market.
She asked her Papa, "Papa can I please take this bracelet."

Maya's Papa told, "Ok Maya".

Maya was very happy. At night she kept her bracelet down and gone to bed.

That time Maya and her parents were sleeping. Suddenly a thief came. She took Maya's shining bracelet.

In the morning when Maya woke up, she saw that her bracelet is not there.
Then Maya came and asked, " Mamma, Mamma where you kept my bracelet?"

Her Mamma told, "I didn't keep it anywhere"
Then Maya told "Then how my bracelet is not there"
Mamma told Maya, "I think a thief came"
Then Mamma told, "Maya Maya, Let's call the police,"
The police caught the thief.
Maya got her bracelet and she was very happy.

Moral of the story is - Take care of your things.
*first the moral was - If thief comes, call the police. It changed to the present moral while writing it in the blog :)

Mother told Cinderella, " Try just one time, if you can't then I will help you."

Then Cinderella's mother pushed her.  Cinderella fell on the ground then Cinderella's friend, Ella came.

She told Cinderella, " Come on! you hold my hand, I will help you to fly."

Cinderella told, "Ok."

So she hold Ella and told, " Ok Ella I will hold your hand."

Mishti's introduction to Robi Thakur!

Mishti has been humming and singing Robindro Sangeet with me since she started humming :) . So technically it was not the first time that she was introduced to Him.

But it was a formal introduction though...
The first story that I read to her from Tagore's collection - Kabuliwala...

'Mini' was five year old when she met her Kabuliwala and so I thought Mishti should meet him too now when she is five :).

With at least 10 questions after every para...Mishti finally understood and enjoyed Kabuliwala.

After the story was over, Mishti was running around the house screaming... "Kabuliwala.... O Kabuliwala...."
